seaweed

Until relatively recently my irrational childhood fear of seaweed stopped me from entering the sea. I felt anxiety and fear about it’s otherness. The slimy, bulbous and strange ribbons represented a world so different from my experience.

However time and curiosity has brought me to cherish and respect this extraordinary algae in all it’s wildly different forms. The smells and textures I was once afraid of have become fascinating and intoxicating. I am intrigued by their beauty, strength and resilience.

Sea-weed sways and sways and swirls

as if swaying were its form of stillness;

and if it flushes against fierce rock

it slips over it as shadows do, without hurting itself.
