After the massive storm, I climb down into the cove to see what’s been washed up. The plastic detritus is horrifying and makes up the bulk of what’s been left on the beach. I feel distressed at imagining how this affects the creatures of the sea, the destruction brought by these bits of plastic bottles, toothbrushes, cotton buds and rope from fishing boats. Amongst this entangled mess of rubbish I began to see the odd piece of sponge. I get on my hands and knees, climbing into the 3 smalls caves to reach the different pieces. Collecting them was like finding gold, I love their texture and sculpturally elegant shapes. This sparked the beginning of my research into these animals, discovering their incredible role in the development of life
